The church was founded in 1848 in midtown Atlanta, Georgia. [1] Charles Stanley, joined the staff in 1969 and became senior pastor in 1971. [2] [3] In the late 20th century, a commercial facility was purchased on Atlanta's Interstate 285 and the church relocated to the larger, more accessible property in DeKalb County. [4]
The senior pastor at the time, Rev. W. Frank Harrington, grew the church from fewer than 3,000 members in 1971 to more than 11,000 at the time of his death in 1999. [7] In 1992, Rev.
