Wallsend is a western suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Newcastle's central business district. It is split between the local government areas of City of Newcastle and City of Lake Macquarie .
From 1880 to 1925, or so, an active program of race days was pursued. Visitors from Newcastle often came to Wallsend by tram (after 1887) and then walked the mile or so (1.7 km) from the tram terminus in Wallsend to the racecourse beyond the corner of Macquarie Street and Minmi Road.
Cooks Hill was badly damaged when at 10.27am on 28 December 1989, Newcastle experienced an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale which killed 13 people, injured 162 and destroyed or severely damaged over 25,000 buildings, many of which had to be subsequently demolished. It was the first in Australian history known to claim human lives.
