The Olympic Hymn is a 1981 composition by Leonard Bernstein to a text by Günter Kunert. [1] It was written for the International Olympic Congress of 1981 in Baden-Baden , West Germany. [ 2 ] It was premiered by the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Baden-Baden Youth Choir under conductor David Shallon on 23 September 1981. [ 3 ]
It was played in full on the album Summon the Heroes by the Boston Pops Orchestra, released April 30, 1996. [ citation needed ] The piece was played at the 1996 Summer Olympics on July 19 by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra , in an abridged form lasting three-and-a-half minutes, and conducted by Williams.
The title sequence used for television coverage of the Games pairs the song with an animation depicting the United Kingdom as one vast stadium. [1] Although the full version lasts more than six minutes, it was intentionally composed to allow different clips of one or two minutes to be played during montages of winners or losers. [4]
