The area was once an isolated rural hamlet called Bure. [2] A place called "Beora" is recorded early in the 12th century as being granted to Christchurch Priory. [2] An estate map of 1796 depicts the hamlet of Bure as comprising two clusters of houses on either bank of Bure Brook and facing on to a village green. [2]
The first town hall was a medieval timber structure built in Millhams Street. [3] The current town hall, which was designed in the neoclassical style, was originally built in the Market Square in 1746 but, in order to improve traffic flow, it was dismantled and rebuilt in its current position in the former Blanchard's Yard in the High Street in 1859.
The ward covers the Jumpers Common and Fairmile areas of Christchurch. The southern border of the ward follows the River Stour. Other rural parts of the ward include; Hurn, East Parley and Parley Common. The ward is the largest in the council. Commons ward includes Bournemouth International Airport.
Christchurch is a town and former borough in the county of Dorset on the English Channel coast, adjoining Bournemouth in the west, with the New Forest to the east. Historically in Hampshire, it joined Dorset with the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and is the most easterly borough in the county.
