The Tyndale Bible (TYN) generally refers to the body of biblical translations by William Tyndale into Early Modern English, made c. 1522–1535.Tyndale's biblical text is credited with being the first Anglophone Biblical translation to work directly from Greek and, for the Pentateuch, Hebrew texts, although it relied heavily upon the Latin Vulgate and German Bibles.
In 1937, he published a biography of the Bible translator William Tyndale, in 1940 a study of John Foxe's Book of Martyrs and in 1953 a work on Miles Coverdale's translation of the Bible. [1] The Bible scholar Jack P. Lewis said Mozley's work "furnished excellent treatments of the Bibles of Coverdale and Tyndale". [7]
The film God's Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale, was released in 1986. The 1998 film Stephen's Test of Faith includes a long scene with Tyndale, how he translated the Bible, and how he was put to death. Coverdale based the Great Bible on Tyndale's work, but removed the features objectionable to the bishops. He translated the remaining books of the Old Testament using mostly the Latin Vulgate and German translations. [7] Coverdale's failure to translate from the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts gave impetus to the Bishops' Bible.
