The Independent Party, also known as the Golden Valley Party, [1] [2] was a pro-British political party in Burma during the 1920s and 1930s. Its leadership included Joseph Augustus Maung Gyi, U Khin and U May Oung. [2] Oscar de Glanville was also a party leader.
Alongside the National League for Democracy, it is one of Myanmar's two principal national parties. [4] USDP is the successor to the former ruling military junta's mass organisation, the Union Solidarity and Development Association , and serves as the electoral proxy of the Tatmadaw (military), which operates as a state within a state .
Its armed wing, the Patriotic Liberation Army, unsuccessfully attempted insurgency along the border between Thailand and Burma. In 1970, with covert CIA backing, [3] the party tried to establish a united front, known as the National United Front, together with the Karen National Union, the Chin Democracy Party and the New Mon State Army.
The former Wa members of the CPB then formed the Burma National United Party (BNUP), before agreeing to a merger with several smaller, non-communist Wa groups that were active along the China–Myanmar border, [11] such as the Wa National Council (WNC). [12] The United Wa State Party (UWSP) was subsequently founded on 3 November 1989.
The KNA was established in 1881, the first modern political party in the country. [1] It represented the Christian Karen and Sgaw communities, replacing the American Baptist missionaries as the main voice of the Karens to the colonial government.
The party was established by a merger of Dobama Asiayone (DAA), Ba Maw's Poor Man's Party and the All-Burma Students Association, and was known as the "Htwet Yat Gain" (Burmese: ထွက်ရပ်ဂိုဏ်း, "Association of the Way Out"), [4] although DAA leaders secretly formed the People's Revolutionary Party at the time of the merger. The party was formed by former members of the General Council of Burmese Associations prior to the 1925 elections, and was named after the Indian Swaraj Party. [1] Its leadership included Ba Maw, N. C. Bannerjee and Toke Gyi, who was head of the party.
