Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park (also called Creve Coeur County Park) is a 2,145-acre (8.68 km 2) St. Louis County park located in Maryland Heights, Missouri, United States. The park is the largest in the St. Louis County Parks system [ 1 ] and includes Creve Coeur Lake , an oxbow lake which is one of the largest natural lakes in Missouri.
Created in 1938, [1] this 8,400-acre (34 km 2) lake is located 120 miles (190 km) south of St. Louis, Missouri. The reservoir lies mostly in Wayne County, but its southernmost reaches (near the dam) extend into northern Butler County, both in Missouri.
An oral tradition in St. Louis links the cave system with the Underground Railroad. According to this tradition a tunnel behind the house at 3314 Lemp Avenue was used as a secret entrance to the caves. One entrance to the caves opens near the Mississippi River, where the slaves could make their way to freedom. [3]
