I know the spoolmatic 30A is the best spool gun to match up with this welder, but the cheapest I can find it is $1200, which is more than I really want to spend. Are there less expensive options that would work with this welder? Ideally I would like to be below $500.
Re: Miller spool gun the same as hobart? I bought a Spoolmate 100 gun for my MM211... ant it fits - and welds - perfectly on my Ironman 230. Probably cant handle the full amperage of the IM in the long run, but its been working fine so far at moderate settings.
The Spoolmate 100 is weak even for my little 211. I make due with it as I don't see much benefit in shelling out for an SGA-100 and 3035 or 3045 for just a little more duty cycle gun side before hitting the duty cycle on the machine. Miller should've made the 211 Spoolmate 200 compatible for a closer duty cycle pairing.
It is tough to get into tight areas. I bought an Aluma-pro push-pull gun because it was plug and play with my Millermatic 255. The Aluma-pro fits into tighter locations. The gun is lighter than a spool gun, and you can run full size spool of wire - rather than the small spools in a spool gun. For a wire suggestion, I have run 4043, 4943, and 5356.
The spool gun has to get the current from the power lug inside the welder. After thinking about it, I guess its possible to connect both the whip and spool gun at the same time, I'm sure Miller won't authorize using the 252 in this way and I wouldn't use it this way either.
Mechanically the Miller spoolgun fit fine, but it turns out the polarity going to the drive motor is reversed between the two machines. When connected to the Hobart, the Miller spoolgun would pull the wire back onto the spool rather than feeding it out. Simple fix, i just resoldered the wires to the little drive motor backwards.
I have noticed some cheap spool guns in Northern and on ebay. Can I put a aluminum spool gun on an older miller challenger 172 mig? It has a 4 pin input for the main gun. My welding store does not know how without setting up a expensive add on box which looks unneeded to me.

The connection is where the spool gun hooks up. It is not a 14 pin like on some welders Miller makes, but a 10 pin that is exclusive to the spoolgun or the comparable push,-,pull setup. The 15a and 30a are the spool guns for the 252. A 15a is just a shorter cable version of the 30a.
Re: Yet another miller 252 30A spool gun question: 5356 wire Unless you are welding in a windstorm, you should not need more than 20 cf/hr of argon for the welds on 1/8". My 252 using the 30A spool will go into spray mode using 4043 at 15 cf/hr.
