VeraCrypt is a free and open-source utility for on-the-fly encryption (OTFE). [5] The software can create a virtual encrypted disk that works just like a regular disk but within a file. It can also encrypt a partition [6] or (in Windows) the entire storage device with pre-boot authentication. [7] VeraCrypt is a fork of the discontinued ...
Portable or "traveller mode" means the encryption software can be run without installation to the system hard drive. In this mode, the software typically installs a temporary driver from the portable media. Since it is installing a driver (albeit temporarily), administrative privileges are still required.
Transparent operation mode: This mode uses the capabilities of TPM 1.2 hardware to provide for transparent user experience—the user powers up and logs into Windows as usual. The key used for disk encryption is sealed (encrypted) by the TPM chip and will only be released to the OS loader code if the early boot files appear to be unmodified.
(Note that this is not the same leak the ECB mode has: with LRW mode equal plaintexts in different positions are encrypted to different ciphertexts.) Some security concerns exist with LRW, and this mode of operation has now been replaced by XTS. LRW is employed by BestCrypt and supported as an option for dm-crypt and FreeOTFE disk encryption ...

For Data at Rest protection a computer or laptop is simply powered off. The disk now self-protects all the data on it. The data is safe because all of it, even the OS, is now encrypted, with a secure mode of AES, and locked from reading and writing. The drive requires an authentication code which can be as strong as 32 bytes (2^256) to unlock.
