St Catharine's Hall had long been associated with the saint, having been built c. 1520 as a chapel, popularly called St Catherine's Chapel, (though officially "Chapel of Our Lady at Smith Gate"). [18] [19] Although deconsecrated, the 16th-century appellation of "St Catharine's" remained attached to the site throughout its later history. [20]

[2] However, in March 1844, Mr Rooke of Oriel College informed the Oxford Architectural Society that the figure was actually St Mary. In 1898, the city exchanged the building with George Fisher for a house in St Aldate's. [5]
