Ninove means "nieuw weiland" or in English, "new pasture". During Roman rule, Ninove was a small settlement located in the current "Nederwijk". With the arrival of the Franks in the 4th century AD, the settlement grew to a small agricultural town. The area on which Ninove is located was from 843 on part of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Paris-Strasbourg line opened in 1849, and the infrastructure of the Paris-Strasbourg railway company (after 1854, Compagnie des chemins de fer de l'Est) separated La Chapelle from La Villette. A junction between the two networks was granted to both companies by decree on December 10, 1851. [ 140 ]

The name is derived from the La Défense de Paris monument which was built in 1870 as a commemorative building to mark the 1870 War.
