Cuba’s grid goes offline amid a massive blackout and after a major power plant fails By ANDREA RODRÍGUEZ Associated Press HAVANA (AP) — Cuba’s electrical grid went offline Friday after one of the island’s major power plants failed, and as a massive blackout that started a day earlier swept across the Caribbean island.
While some homes have spent up to eight hours a day this year without electricity as the grid has grown more unstable, the current power failure is considered Cuba’s worst in years. Officials said that 1.64 gigawatts went offline during peak hours, about half the total demand at the time.
Most of Cuba’s population has had no electricity since Friday morning, when a failure at the Antonio Guiteras power station in the western province of Matanzas caused the entire grid to collapse.
