As at December 2015, there are 34 institutions of higher education in Rwanda, 11 public and 23 private. [1] In 2013, the government of Rwanda merged all public universities, leading to one public university, University of Rwanda, with six colleges. [2] [3]
In 2013, the Government of Rwanda and Partners In Health were considering guilding a medical school next to Butaro Hospital.At that same time, Joyce and Bill Cummings, founders of the Cummings Foundation in Woburn, Massachusetts, visited Rwanda for the ribbon-cutting of the Butaro Outpatient Cancer Infusion Center, whose construction had been funded by the Cummings Foundation. The Access Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the quality and accessibility of health care in Rwanda.Founded in 2002 by public health expert Josh Ruxin and economist Jeffrey Sachs, the organization provides technical and operational assistance to improve the management capacity of rural health centers, [1] with a focus on maternal and child health.
Health insurance became mandatory for all individuals in 2008; [5] in 2010 over 90% of the population was covered. [6] In 2012, only about 4% were uninsured. [1]President Kagame made healthcare one of the priorities for the Vision 2020 development programme, [7] boosting spending on health care to 6.5% of the country's gross domestic product in 2013, [8] compared with 1.9% in 1996. After independence, the school was renamed the Groupe Scolaire de Butare. This school is regarded as one of the most selective schools in Rwanda. [3] In 2004 President of Rwanda Paul Kagame visited the school to celebrate its 75th anniversary and thank the Brothers of Charity. [4] In 2012 the school celebrated its 83rd anniversary. [3]
