The Agnes Irwin School is a non-sectarian college preparatory day school for girls from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It was founded in 1869 by Agnes Irwin in Philadelphia . Irwin, a great-great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin , later became the first dean of Radcliffe College .
Agnes Irwin (December 30, 1841 – December 5, 1914) was an American educator, best known as the first dean of Radcliffe College (1894–1909). [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Prior to that, she served as the principal of the West Penn Square Seminary for Young Ladies in Philadelphia (later renamed as the Agnes Irwin School ).
Lowell began as nursery school in the basement of Cleveland Park Congregational Church at 34th and Lowell Streets, N.W. The annual tuition was $325. [2] Gail Shandler joined the staff in 1966 and went on to become the school's director in 1967. In 1975 the school added a kindergarten.
Similar amounts were allocated to the Agnes Irwin School and Sophie Irwin Memorial Fund for Teachers, the Bryn Mawr School for Girls at Baltimore, and the Franklin Institute of Pennsylvania. [ 5 ] In recognition of her contributions to women's higher education, several institutions have honored Marion Reilly's memory.
