History. Construction of Fort Travis began on 8 April 1898, and was completed in October 1899. The fort was named in honor of William B. Travis. [2] The federal government purchased 97 acres (39 ha) in 1898 and completed Batteries Ernst and Davis. After the 1900 Galveston hurricane a 17 feet (5.2 m) seawall was built for storm protection.
