Danny Carey uses a diverse set of drums, including custom Sonor drum shells that give him the exact specifications and rich, full sounds he needs. He is also known for staying loyal to Paiste cymbals throughout his career.
Danny first began snare drum lessons with Keith Murray at the age of ten. By thirteen, Carey started learning to play the full drum kit, learning from Bryan Ayers. In his senior year, Danny joined the high school jazz ensemble — a move which would later influence his drumming in rock and metal.
Carey’s most famous drum set is the now legendary Paiste Signature Bronze Custom Cast kit by Jeff Ocheltree. A drum set made by Paiste, you say? Well yes, this beast is made from Paiste Signature cymbals that were melted down and reshaped into a full drum set with 6 toms and 2 bass drums.
Following the first part of the kit tour, Danny Carey himself chimed-in to talk about why his drum shells become progressively thinner as the drums increase in size, his bass drum sizes and pedal settings.
