List of straight-chain alkanes. The following is a list of straight-chain alkanes, the total number of isomers of each (including branched chains), and their common names, sorted by number of carbon atoms. [1][2] Number of C atoms. Number of isomers [3][4] Number of isomers including stereoisomers [3][5] Molecular Formula. Name of straight chain.
Alkane. In organic chemistry, an alkane, or paraffin (a historical trivial name that also has other meanings), is an acyclic saturated hydrocarbon. In other words, an alkane consists of hydrogen and carbon atoms arranged in a tree structure in which all the carbon–carbon bonds are single. [1] Alkanes have the general chemical formula CnH2n+2.
Category:Alkanes. Wikimedia Commons has media related to Alkanes. The main article for this category is Alkane. An alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon. See Alkane . Alkanes as substituents are called alkyl groups.
Hydrocarbon. Ball-and-stick model of the methane molecule, CH 4. Methane is part of a homologous series known as the alkanes, which contain single bonds only. In organic chemistry, a hydrocarbon is an organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon. [1]: 620 Hydrocarbons are examples of group 14 hydrides.
Hexane (/ ˈ h ɛ k s eɪ n /) or n-hexane is an organic compound, a straight-chain alkane with six carbon atoms and the molecular formula C 6 H 14. [7]Hexane is a colorless liquid, odorless when pure, and with a boiling point of approximately 69 °C (156 °F).
Higher alkanes are naturally present in crude oil and can be obtained via fractional distillation. Saturated fatty acids decarboxylate to higher alkanes. Long olefins can be hydrogenated to yield higher alkanes. n-alkanes can be isolated via the formation of urea clathrates. They can also be synthesized through Kolbe electrolysis or other coupling reactions like the Wurtz reaction.
Cycloalkane. Ball-and-stick model of cyclobutane. In organic chemistry, the cycloalkanes (also called naphthenes, but distinct from naphthalene) are the monocyclic saturated hydrocarbons. [1] In other words, a cycloalkane consists only of hydrogen and carbon atoms arranged in a structure containing a single ring (possibly with side chains), and ...
This ain't a list of alkanes, this is a list of n-alkanes! The article should be renamed (and, to make it more useful, some properties could be added, like boiling point, freezing point, octane number, etc). Albmont ( talk) 13:50, 30 January 2008 (UTC) [ reply] I agree. I'll move it to List of straight-chain alkanes.
