The centerpiece of medieval Albanian art started with the successor of the Roman Empire, namely the Byzantine Empire that ruled the great majority of Albania and the Balkan Peninsula. [1] It comprised gradually of frescoes, murals, and icons painted with an admirable use of color and gold.

The encyclopedia is the first of its kind in Albania, an ambitious project which will eventually be published in six to eight volumes. The publication is a product of the Center of Studies of Art, part of the Albanian Academy of Sciences. The encyclopedia has a board of 10 people, including some of the most prominent scholars in their fields.

The school still maintains ties with the Russian School of Ballet and Classical Music. In 1991, the Higher Institute of Arts was promoted to university level and renamed Academy of Arts. On October 12, 2009, the President of Albania, Bamir Topi awarded the Academy of Arts the "Grand Master Order". [3]
