A gu (Korean: 구), or district, is an administrative unit in South Korea. There are two kinds of districts in South Korea. One is the autonomous district (자치구; jachigu) of special and metropolitan cities, which is a municipal entity similar to a city with its own mayor along with its own legislative council.
The gu vary greatly in area (from 10 to 47 km 2) and population (from less than 140,000 to 630,000). Songpa District is the most populated, while Seocho District has the largest area. Gu are similar to London 's or New York 's boroughs or Tokyo 's 23 special wards .
A gu (구; 區) is equivalent to district in the West. The metropolitan cities of Busan, Daegu, Incheon and Ulsan contain gun as well. Gu are similar to boroughs in some Western countries, and a gu office handles many of the functions that would be handled by the city in other jurisdictions.
