Novi Sad (Serbian Cyrillic: Нови Сад, pronounced [nôʋiː sâːd] ⓘ; see below for other names) is the second largest city in Serbia after the capital Belgrade and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It is located in the southern portion of the Pannonian Plain on the border of the Bačka and Syrmia geographical regions.
The settlement officially gained the present name Novi Sad (Neoplanta in Latin) in 1748 when it became a "free royal city". In 1780, Novi Sad had about 2,000 houses, of which 1,144 were Serbian. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, Novi Sad was the largest city populated with ethnic Serbs in the world.
As of January 2016, JGSP Novi Sad has 259 buses in its fleet operating in urban and suburban lines, with the average bus age of 13.5 years. [5]According to the list of registered buses for the calendar year of 2015, JGSP Novi Sad has the following bus brands in its fleet: Volvo, Ikarbus, Solaris, Irisbus and Neobus.
The lines from it connect Novi Sad with major towns in Vojvodina, such as Subotica, Sombor, Bačka Topola, Vrbas, Zrenjanin, Pančevo, Inđija and the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The Soko high-speed train (its name meaning falcon in English) connects Belgrade and Novi Sad with a journey time of up to 36 minutes since 19 March 2022.
