In 1914, Putnam County levied a 10-cent property tax for education and moved to provide public high school education for all children in Putnam County. On August 22, 1959, Upperman High School opened with an enrollment of 363 students from grades 9 through 12 on the campus of the former Baxter Seminary. Dave C. Huddleston was the school's first principal. In 1976, a new school building was built on the same campus and enrollment was expanded to include grades 7 through 12.
