Great Eastern Highway is the main connection through to Perth. From the edge of the Wheatbelt, at the Boorabbin National Park, it heads east, to the town of Coolgardie. Three hundred metres (980 ft) beyond the townsite, traffic bound for South Australia turns south onto Coolgardie–Esperance Highway, following the National Highway 94 route.
Great Southern Highway begins near Perth's eastern metropolitan boundary, linking towns such as York, Brookton, Narrogin, and Katanning. Near the eastern end of the highway, Coolgardie is the starting point of Coolgardie–Esperance Highway, connecting to the interstate route Eyre Highway at Norseman, as well as the coastal town of Esperance.
There are few towns on the highway: Coolgardie, Widgiemooltha, Norseman, Salmon Gums, Grass Patch, Gibson, and Esperance. [4] These are mostly separated by distances of 50 to 100 kilometres (30 to 60 mi), except for Salmon Gums–Grass Patch and Gibson–Esperance which are only 29 kilometres (18 mi) and 22 kilometres (14 mi) apart respectively.
Great Northern Highway is a main highway in the northern Wheatbelt, and part of the Perth to Darwin national highway. From the north-eastern edge of Perth, the highway travels north through Muchea, Bindoon, and New Norcia. It then heads generally north-easterly, to Dalwallinu, Wubin, and into the Midwest region beyond. [5]
