[32] and has siding-over-log construction. The Bear Bend Cabin, a four-room, story-and-a-half log cabin, was built by Sam Houston as a hunting lodge in the 1850s. [33]
The 20th-century ranch house style has its roots in Spanish colonial architecture of the 17th to 19th century. These buildings used single-story floor plans and native materials in a simple style to meet the needs of their inhabitants. Walls were often built of adobe brick and covered with plaster, or more simply used board and batten wood siding.
Cape Cod–style house c. 1920. The Cape Cod house is defined as the classic American house. In the original design, Cape Cod houses had the following features: symmetry, steep roofs, central chimneys, windows at the door, flat design, one to one-and-a-half stories, narrow stairways, and simple exteriors.
Originally the structure was a one-room-over-one-room floor plan on the current eastern portion of the house. The western portion of the house was built on sometime in the mid-18th century based on its architectural elements. [40] This addition gave the home its central chimney and a lean-to was added later on. [41]
The farmhouse is a rambling 1-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a Cape style main block, a tall ell to the east, and a long single-story ell running north from the north west corner of the main block. The original portion of the house dates to the early 19th century, but has a later 19th-century turret-like projection built above its front door.
It is not known what original 17th-century elements remain in the now private residence. The dormer at the rear ell, the one-story addition joining barn, and 2-story rear ell were all added in the 20th century.
