The lower Fox River flows from the natural impoundment of Lake Winnebago to Lake Michigan. [1] It extends about 39 river miles (63 km) from Menasha at the head of Lake Winnebago to Lake Michigan, falling 169 feet (52 m) from about elevation 746 feet (227 m), msl at Winnebago to 577 feet (176 m), msl at Green Bay.
Puckaway Lake also referred to as Lake Puckaway is a lake in Green Lake County and Marquette County, Wisconsin. [2] The lake has a surface area of 5,013 acres (20.29 km 2) and a max depth of 5 ft (1.5 m). [3] Most of the lake has a muck bottom and is shallow with an average depth of 3 ft (0.91 m).
The lake is part of the Winnebago Pool of lakes fed by both the Fox and Wolf Rivers. The Fox-Wolf basin is usually considered to be a single unified basin and the rivers themselves may be referred to as the Fox-Wolf River system. The river is known in the Menominee language as Mahwāēw-Sēpēw, "wolf river". [2]
A system of seventeen locks connects Lake Winnebago to Lake Michigan at Green Bay, an elevation drop of about 150 feet (45 m). This lock system is located along the lower Fox River and starts at the northwest corner of Lake Winnebago in the city of Menasha and ends at the mouth of Green Bay.
