A saltbox house is a gable-roofed residential structure that is typically two stories in the front and one in the rear. It is a traditional New England style of home, originally timber framed , which takes its name from its resemblance to a wooden lidded box in which salt was once kept.
The house is a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story brick structure with a side-gable gambrel roof, end chimneys, and a rear wood-frame ell. The main entrance is a double door centered on the front facade, topped by a transom window. It was built by Nathaniel Hayden in 1763. [3] The home was inherited by Captain Hayden's son Nathaniel.
The I-house is a vernacular house type, popular in the United States from the colonial period onward. The I-house was so named in the 1930s by Fred Kniffen, a cultural geographer at Louisiana State University who was a specialist in folk architecture.
