Hacksaw blades are normally quite brittle, so care needs to be taken to prevent brittle fracture of the blade. Early blades were of carbon steel, now termed 'low alloy' blades, and were relatively soft and flexible. They avoided breakage, but also wore out rapidly. Except where cost is a particular concern, this type is now obsolete.
The blade is made of non-rustproof carbon steel, blue-plastered by hand and finely forged from the base to the tip of the knife. The 90 mm (3.5 in) long blade shows patina (dark spots) caused by decades of use. It can easily be sharpened to a shaving sharp edge. Carbon steel is a popular choice for rough-use knives and cheaper options.
In 1960, after ten years of representing other producers of perishable hardware, M. K. "Ken" Morse became frustrated after losing some of the manufacturers that he was representing due to undependable suppliers. In order to ensure on-time delivery of products, Morse began selling hand hacksaw blades under the M. K. Morse label. Two years later ...
LENOX Tools is an American brand of hand tools, power tool accessories, and industrial band saw blades. It largely produces saws, saw blades, utility knives, snips, and other cutting tools. The brand was founded in 1915 as the "American Saw and Manufacturing Company" by ten employees to produce hacksaw blades. [1]
Rotary cutting tools include drill bits, countersinks and counterbores, taps and dies, reamers, and cold saw blades. Other cutting tools, such as bandsaw blades, hacksaw blades, and fly cutters, combine aspects of linear and rotary motion. The majority of these types of cutting tools are often made from HSS (High-Speed-Steel).
High-speed steel (HSS or HS) is a subset of tool steels, commonly used as cutting tool material. It is superior to high-carbon steel tools in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high-speed steel.
