The museum was established on October 12, 1961, as the San Diego Aerospace Museum. The museum was first opened to the public on February 15, 1963, in the Food and Beverage Building, which had been built in 1915 for the Panama–California Exposition. Parkway Plaza was developed in the early 1970s, shortly after Plaza Camino Real in Carlsbad, as the second enclosed shopping mall in San Diego County. Building an indoor mall was ideal for the area, as El Cajon is notoriously hot during the summer. Since opening the mall, Parkway Plaza has expanded as necessary.
