Great Eastern Highway is a 590-kilometre-long (370 mi) road that links the Western Australian capital of Perth with the city of Kalgoorlie.A key route for road vehicles accessing the eastern Wheatbelt and the Goldfields, it is the western portion of the main road link between Perth and the eastern states of Australia.
There are few towns on the highway: Coolgardie, Widgiemooltha, Norseman, Salmon Gums, Grass Patch, Gibson, and Esperance. [4] These are mostly separated by distances of 50 to 100 kilometres (30 to 60 mi), except for Salmon Gums–Grass Patch and Gibson–Esperance which are only 29 kilometres (18 mi) and 22 kilometres (14 mi) apart respectively.
Many major roads in Perth [4] and in rural Western Australia [5] are not assigned a route number. Not many routes have been added in the Perth and Peel regions since the 1990s with the exceptions including the Graham Farmer Freeway in 2000 and Mandjoogoordap Drive in 2010. Great Northern Highway is a main highway in the northern Wheatbelt, and part of the Perth to Darwin national highway. From the north-eastern edge of Perth, the highway travels north through Muchea, Bindoon, and New Norcia. It then heads generally north-easterly, to Dalwallinu, Wubin, and into the Midwest region beyond. [5]
A third act, the Coolgardie–Kalgoorlie Railway Act 1895, assented to on 2 October 1895, authorised construction of a railway line from Coolgardie to Kalgoorlie. [8] The Eastern Railway opened in stages from Perth to Northam in the 1890s, and the Eastern Goldfields Railway extended this line through semi-desert to the Eastern Goldfields. [9] [10]
The highway is approximately 797 kilometres (495 mi) in length, and is designated as Alternate National Route 94 from Kalgoorlie to Coolgardie–Esperance Highway. The full highway has also been assigned State Route 132 since a review of state routes was conducted in 2024.
