White toenails can take time to treat, Dr. Wofford emphasizes, “I remind my patients that any treatment or intervention will take six to nine months to yield results due to the slow nature of ...
Toenail fungus starts innocently enough, appearing as a small white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail. It’s easy to overlook or dismiss as dirt or a minor discoloration.
What Causes White Toenails? 1. Fungus. One of the most common causes of white toenails or spots is a fungal infection (onychomycosis) or a yeast infection (Candida).
As the infection progresses the nail can become brittle, with pieces breaking off or coming away from the toe or finger completely. If left untreated, the skin underneath and around the nail can become inflamed and painful. There may also be white or yellow patches on the nailbed or scaly skin next to the nail, [7] and a foul smell. [8]
It is also caused by trauma. In most cases, when white spots appear on a single or a couple of fingernails or toenails, the most common cause is injury to the base (matrix) of the nail. When this is the case, white spots disappear after around eight months, which is the amount of time the nails take to regrow completely.
The colour may range from light or blueish green or yellow-green to darker green or black. [8] [3] Nails may be separated from the nail bed (onycholysis) [3] and may have green stripes from repeated infections. [3] Chronic fungal infection (onychomycosis) may also be present. [4]
