USS Saratoga (CV-3) was a Lexington-class aircraft carrier built for the United States Navy during the 1920s. Originally designed as a battlecruiser , she was converted into one of the Navy's first aircraft carriers during construction to comply with the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922.

VF-12 F6F-3 launches from USS Saratoga in 1943. VF-12 equipped with F6F-3 Hellcats formed part of Carrier Air Group 12 (CAG-12) and was assigned to USS Saratoga, flying aboard on 1 August 1943. CAG-12 supported the Battle of the Treasury Islands from October-November before the Saratoga returned to Pearl Harbor on 30 November.
VT-8 pilots and air crew also participated in the ground defense of Henderson Field, assisting to fend off Japanese infantry attacks on 24–26 October 1942. VT-8's last official mission was flown on 15 November 1942, against damaged transports from the last major Japanese convoy to the island.
Appointed Aviation Cadet on 4 October 1938 and commissioned ensign on 15 October 1939, he reported for duty with Torpedo Squadron 3, on board USS Saratoga on 20 November 1939. Promoted to lieutenant (junior grade) on 1 November 1941, he was killed in action during the Battle of Midway, June 1942. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
