In case of foul weather, the lighthouse keeper could stay in a small wooden shanty. The first lighthouse keeper was James Stockbridge Lewis, who had assisted in its construction. After six months, Hosea Lewis, who was the father of James Lewis and a retired pilot, was appointed keeper. In 1857, a two-story house was built for the lighthouse keeper.
By 1890, however, the three lights were dangerously close to the cliff's edge. Since it was impossible at the time to move the three lights intact, three 22-foot (6.7 m) wooden lighthouses with otherwise identical markings were built in 1892 to replace the former lights, each built 30 feet (9.1 m) west of their original sites and using the lenses from the originals.
In 2011 the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy was the subject of a BBC radio play called The Lighthouse, written by Alan Harris. [11] The 2016 British film The Lighthouse, directed by Chris Crow, is also loosely based on the incident. [12] The 2019 film The Lighthouse by the American director Robert Eggers was also partly inspired by the tragedy. [13] [14]
Perkins Island Light is a lighthouse on the Kennebec River in Maine. [2] [3] It was established in 1898, as part of a major upgrade of the river's lights — the Doubling Point Light and the separate Range Lights on the point, Perkins Island Light, and Squirrel Point Light were all built at the same time.
The lightkeeper's home was a small 1 + 1 ⁄ 2-story home built on the opposite side of a marsh, several hundred feet away from the tower. [5] Another brick structure was built to house the oil. [5] The total cost of the wooden lighthouse, and likely the accompanying keeper's house and oil house, was listed at $4604.69. [6]
