The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is a zoo in Belize, located some 47 kilometres (29 mi) west of Belize City on the Western Highway. Set in 12 hectares (29 acres), the zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola. It is home to more than 175 animals of about 48 species, all native to Belize.

April (April 27, 1983 - October 31, 2013) was a tapir living at the Belize Zoo in Belize from 1983 until her death in 2013. She was a Baird's tapir, the national animal of Belize. [1] April was born on 27 April 1983. That date is now National Tapir Day in Belize, and World Tapir Day globally.
The early stages of bird conservation in Belize are attributed to the Belize Audubon Society, whose first conservation project was the jabiru, added to Belize's list of protected species in 1973. [16] In 1977, the government established seven bird sanctuaries for the protection of waterfowl nesting and roosting colonies.
