The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA / ˈ m ɑːr t ə /) is the principal public transport operator in the Atlanta metropolitan area.Formed in 1971 as strictly a bus system, MARTA operates a network of bus routes linked to a rapid transit system consisting of 48 miles (77 km) of rail track with 38 subway stations.
It also marked the start of MARTA's combined bus and rail service. December 22, 1979 – MARTA's second line, the West Line, began operating between Hightower (H.E. Holmes) and Five Points Station. December 4, 1981 - Garnett, Civic Center, North Avenue, and Five Points (north-south platform) stations began service. The North Line was introduced.
