The main university campus is located at Tenhipalam, 24 km (15 mi) south of the city of Calicut and about 30 km (19 mi) from city of Malappuram.Most of the teaching and research departments, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, and the Administration Block are situated on the main campus.

It is affiliated to the Calicut University [1] and provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in science, arts and commerce subjects. The college is ranked 84th among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024. [2] The institution was started in the year 1866. [3]

This college has turned to be the hub of higher education in North Kerala. The college was established in 1958, which was then affiliated to the University of Kerala. Later college was shifted to a new building with new courses in 1963. In 1968, the college was separated from the University of Kerala and affiliated to the University of Calicut. [1]
Prof. Subbayyan T R was the first principal. The courses offered were one Pre – Degree batch each for the 3rd and 4th Groups and Degree courses in History and Economics. The college, affiliated to the Calicut University, was formally inaugurated by the then Chief Minister, the Late C. Achutha Menon on 28 October 1972.
