Mount Cowen is the largest peak near the valley, at 11,212 feet (3,417 m) in elevation. It is located in the southern portion of the valley on the eastern side of the river within the Absaroka mountain range. The valley is winter range for elk, specifically The Paradise Valley Herd and The Northern Herd. [2]
US 191 travels north and east through the valley to the city of Bozeman, which is the largest city along the entire US 191 route. [1] [2] From Bozeman, US 191 is concurrent with I-90 eastward 60.5 miles (97.4 km) to Big Timber, where it proceeds north.
However, cattle ranching expanded beyond the carrying capacity of the land, and a drought year combined with the harsh winter of 1886-1887 decimated Montana's cattle industry. The ranchers who survived began to fence in their ranches and the era of the open range came to an end. [34]
