The event is organized by and benefits the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, a non-profit organization affiliated with the National Hot Rod Association. It includes nostalgia drag race events, a parade of street rods, vendors and a swap meet. It is held on the grounds of National Trail Raceway.
Wally Parks, editor of Hot Rod magazine and a dry lakes racer himself, began the National Hot Rod Association to promote "safety, sportsmanship, and fellowship" among hot rodders. The association gained about 25,000 members in its first year; within six years, it had more than 57,000 members.

The Wally is the trophy awarded to winners of an NHRA national event. They have been handed out at national events starting with the 1969 NHRA race season. With an antique brass plating over a standard metal mix and a solid walnut base, the "Wally" (named after NHRA founder Wally Parks) is 18 inches tall and weighs 12 pounds.
