The earliest incarnation of GDRHS was as the grammar school that was held in Groton town center for which there are funding records as far back as 1758. [16] The residency of the grammar school migrated between the district schools and in 1808 was kept for four months in District school number 1, then two months in number 2, two months in number 3, and two months in number five.

The Reverend Endicott Peabody (May 31, 1857 – November 17, 1944) was an American Episcopal priest who founded Groton School in 1884 and Brooks School in 1926. He also founded St. Paul's Episcopal Church (Tombstone, Arizona) in 1882 and St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (Ayer, Massachusetts) in 1899.
The District 7 School is a historic school building at 366 Chicopee Row in Groton, Massachusetts.The one-room single story brick building was built c. 1833, and is one of four surviving district schools (of which it is the best-preserved) in the town.
