The phrase "Midrash halakha" was first employed by Nachman Krochmal, [6] the Talmudic expression being Midrash Torah = "investigation of the Torah". [7] These interpretations were often regarded as corresponding to the real meaning of the scriptural texts; thus it was held that a correct elucidation of the Torah carried with it the proof of the halakha and the reason for its existence.
It could not have been written earlier than the time of Judah bar Ilai (c. 170 CE), who is the latest tanna to be quoted therein. Abba Arika and Samuel of Nehardea (c. 230 CE) argued on the compilation of the Haggadah, [1] and hence it had not been completed as of then. Based on a Talmudic statement, it was completed by the time of Rav Nachman. [2]

Midrash Aseret ha-Dibrot (Hebrew: מדרש עשרת הדיברות) or Midrash of the Ten Statements is one of the smaller midrashim which dates (according to A. Jellinek) from about the 10th century, and which is devoted entirely to the Shavuot holiday; a Vatican library manuscript in fact calls it "an aggadah for Shavuot."
