Christ I (also known as Christ A or (The) Advent Lyrics) is a fragmentary collection of Old English poems on the coming of the Lord, preserved in the Exeter Book. In its present state, the poem comprises 439 lines in twelve distinct sections.
The poem, with eight colored engraved illustrations, was published in New York by William B. Gilley in 1821 as a small paperback book entitled The Children's Friend: A New-Year's Present, to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve. [1] The names of the author and the illustrator are not known. [2]
Since 1995, Der Andere Advent was published by the ecumenical organization Andere Zeiten and is again an Advent calendar which follows the ecclesiastical year and therefore extends to the 6th of January. Since 2017, Der Andere Advent has an edition for children between the age of 7 and 11 which includes stories, experiments, comics and games. [18]
The O Antiphons (also known as the Great Advent Antiphons or Great Os) are antiphons used at Vespers during the Magnificat on the last seven days of Advent in Western Christian traditions. [1] They likely date to sixth-century Italy, when Boethius refers to the text in The Consolation of Philosophy . [ 2 ]
McNichols went to Christ the King and St. John the Evangelist Catholic schools before attending Regis High School in Denver, Colorado. After attending Colorado State University for one year, he entered the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1968 and studied philosophy, theology, and art at California College of the Arts, St. Louis University, Boston College, and Boston University.
The later hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus" borrows two lines from the hymn (Infirma nostri corporis — Virtute firmans perpeti). "Veni redemptor gentium" was particularly popular in Germany where Martin Luther translated it into German as "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland," which then he, or possibly Johann Walter, set as a chorale, based on the original plainchant.
