SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A jetliner skidded off a runway, slammed into a concrete fence and burst into flames Sunday in South Korea after its landing gear apparently failed to deploy. All but two of the 181 people aboard were killed in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters, officials said.
The jet overran the runway and hit a barrier, trigging a fiery explosion. Footage showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from the plane, which was engulfed in flames. The 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet was arriving from Bangkok when the crash happened at 9:03 a.m. Sunday in the town of Muan.

All but two of the 181 people on board died in one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.
The flight took off at about 9:24 p.m. on 20 February 2005. When the aircraft, a four-engine Boeing 747-436, was around 300 feet (91 m) into the air, flames burst out of its number 2 engine, a result of engine surge. The pilots shut the engine down. Air traffic control expected the plane to return to the airport and deleted its flight plan.
The captain was a 47-year-old male who had logged 7941 hours and 17 minutes of flying time, 3823 hours and 38 minutes of which were logged onto the Boeing 737-800. His co-pilot, aged 26, had logged 890 hours and 38 minutes of flying time, including 182 hours and 30 minutes on the Boeing 737-800. [3]: 27–28
