[4] As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,242, [5] and in 2018 the population was estimated to be 6,884. The gold steeple was added to the University of North Georgia's Price Memorial Hall in 1972 with genuine Dahlonega gold. Dahlonega was where the nation's first major gold rush began in 1828. The process consisted of taking 13 ounces of gold and flattening it out to fit the size of the steeple in several sheets.
