The ESMBA specify a rink mat length of 40–45 ft (12–14 m) with a width of 6 ft (1.8 m). The mat is foam or rubber-backed, and has the required lines permanently marked. A wooden fender is placed at both ends to simulate the 'ditch' and keep the bowls from rolling off the mat.

Stephen Williams (born 3 August 1973) is a Welsh short mat bowls player, and four time singles world champion.Williams won the championship in consecutive tournaments in 2002, and 2004, and then again in 2010 and 2012. [1]
