Baia Mare (US: / ˌ b ɑː j ə ˈ m ɑːr ə / BAH-yə MAR-ə, [2] [3] Romanian: [ˈbaja ˈmare] ⓘ; Hungarian: Nagybánya; German: Frauenbach or Groß-Neustadt; Latin: Rivulus Dominarum) is a municipality along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County.

The town belongs to the Baia Mare metropolitan area. It is located in the western part of the Maramureș County, 10 km (6.2 mi) from the county seat, Baia Mare, on the border with Satu Mare County. Tăuții-Măgherăuș lies on the right bank of the Someș River; the Lăpuș River discharges into the Someș in Bușag village.
Maramureș County is situated in the northern part of Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania, and has a border with Ukraine. This county has a total area of 6,304 square kilometres (2,434 sq mi), of which 43% is covered by the Rodna Mountains , with its tallest peak, Pietrosul [ ro ] , at 2,303 metres (7,556 ft) altitude.
The nearest city is Sighetu Marmației, 13 km (8.1 mi) to the northwest; the county seat, Baia Mare, is 70 km (43 mi) to the southwest. Rona de Sus is crossed by national road DN18 [ro; de], which starts in Baia Mare, runs through Sighetu Marmației and Borșa, and ends in Iacobeni, Suceava.
Recea is crossed by national road DN1C (part of European route E58), which runs from Cluj-Napoca north towards Baia Mare and the border crossing at Halmeu, where it connects with the Ukrainian highway M26. The town has two train stations (Lăpușel and Săsar), both serving the CFR Main Line 400, which connects Brașov with Baia Mare and Satu Mare.
