The ISBN may have been incorrectly labelled invalid, but we have (to our surprise) found several examples where the publisher has put an invalid number on the book (see talk page for examples). Note that just because a number has not been identified as invalid, it doesn't mean it corresponds to the book in question, or indeed any book.

OTOH, contributors with an ISBN from the book in their hand may feel obligated to add the ISBN to the article. Perhaps we could create a template {{Invalid ISBN|2-204-19850-9}} that results in <!-- Invalid ISBN: 2-204-19850-9 -->. Would that cause google searchs for the invalid ISBN to bring up the article?

Do not convert a 10-digit ISBN to 13-digit by just adding the 978 prefix; the last digit is a calculated check digit and just making changes to the numbers will make the ISBN invalid. This parameter should hold only the ISBN without any additional characters. It is checked for length, invalid characters – anything other than numbers, spaces ...
Also, note that a registered ISBN, even one which appears with a corresponding book page on a major book distributor database such as Amazon.com, is not definite proof that such a book exists. The ISBN is assigned before the book is actually produced, so the publisher can advertise it – but not all such plans come to fruition, any more than ...
