'thorn' [1]) is often claimed to be a minor character in Greek mythology whose metamorphosis was the origin of the Acanthus plant. [2] Acantha's myth however does not appear in any classical source. It is known by a variety of names including flame acanthus, [2] [4] Wright's desert honeysuckle, [2] [5] hummingbird bush, [2] [4] Wright acanthus, Wright anisacanth, [4] Texas firecracker, [3] Mexican flame and Wright's Mexican flame. "Wright" refers to American botanist Charles Wright who collected samples of the plant in the mid-19th century.
The generic name derives from the Greek term ἄκανθος (akanthos) for Acanthus mollis, a plant that was commonly imitated in Corinthian capitals. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The genus comprises herbaceous perennial plants , rarely subshrubs , with spiny leaves and flower spikes bearing white or purplish flowers.
