Previously, the venue was an adult movie theater known as Oregon Theater. [2] The building was completed in 1925 and originally housed a Wurlitzer pipe organ and vaudeville stage. It would later screen Hollywood, art-house, and Spanish-language films. The structure was acquired by the Maizels family in 1967 and became an adult cinema in the 1970s.
The Oregon Theatre began showing adult films around the 1970s, following the success of Deep Throat (1972). [9] Drive-in cinemas began to grow in popularity in the late 1940s and throughout the 1960s, and the first in Portland—the 82nd Street Drive-in—was constructed in 1948. [29]
The Joy's specialty was second-run or offbeat movies, and was known for many years for being one of the only theaters in the Portland Metro Area to play Bollywood films.
