The Sakuddei or Sabiroet people are an ethnic group, one of at least eleven, on the island of Siberut, Indonesia. Siberut is the northernmost of the Mentawai Islands which are located 130 km (81 mi) to the west off the coast of Sumatra. The Sakuddei live in south-central Siberut in an egalitarian society, cut off from the outside world.
Livestock, including pigs, which are the lifeblood and economy of Mentawai society, are banished from these same reserves due to introduced social policy. Moreover, the number of Mentawai people still actively practicing cultural customs has been reduced to only 1 percent of the population, isolated to the south of Siberut. [10]
Siberut is the largest and northernmost of the Mentawai Islands, located 150 kilometres west of Sumatra in the Indian It covers an area of 3,838.25 km 2 including smaller offshore islands, and had a population of 35,091 at the 2010 Census [ 2 ] and 40,220 at the 2020 Census; [ 3 ] the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 41,899. Siberut at 3,878 km 2 (1,497 sq mi) is the largest of the islands, occupying 64.27% of the land area of the regency. The other major islands are Sipura (or Sipora ), North Pagai ( Pagai Utara ), and South Pagai ( Pagai Selatan ).
Siberut National Park comprises 1,905 km 2 (47%) of the island of Siberut in the Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The whole island including the national park is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves .
