As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 1,358 people, 489 households, and 365 families residing in the township. The population density was 37.9 inhabitants per square mile (14.6/km 2).
At the census, the CDP had a population of 47 and a total land area of 1.26 square miles (3.3 km 2). [4] Designed by golf course architects Alister MacKenzie and Perry Maxwell in 1929, the par-70, 6,518-yard (5,960 m) course offers views of Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore lies just to its east.
The City of Fremont is located partially within the township and is the only incorporated municipality. Dayton Center is an unincorporated community located just a few miles north and west of Fremont at 43°30′38″N 85°58′48″W / 43.51056°N 85.98000°W / 43.51056; -85.
The club became very popular, hosting the Michigan Open in 1928, and even saw the construction of an airstrip. In 1930 the club hosted the Western Open, one of the most prestigious golf events of the time. In 1948 and 1949 it was site of the Michigan PGA Championship, won by Horton Smith and Chick Harbert, respectively.
