Pulwama (known as Panwangam in antiquity, [6] and later as Pulgam) [7] is a city and notified area council in the Pulwama district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. [8] It is located approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of the summer capital of the state, Srinagar.
When created, Pulwama district had 550 villages, grouped in five subdistricts : Shopian, Awantipora, Pampore, Pulwama, and Tral. [7] After Shopian district was created in 2007, Pulwama district had 331 villages and four subdistricts. [7] According to the district administration, the area of the district is 420 square miles (1,090 km 2). [2]
