An authority can be organized by any county, city, town, borough, township, or school district of the Commonwealth, acting singly or jointly with another municipality. An authority is established by ordinance by one or more municipalities. The governing bodies of the parent local unit or units appoint the members of the authority's board.
The township is drained entirely by tributaries of the Grand River, including the Crockery Creek in the eastern portion. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 33.4 square miles (87 km 2), of which 32.7 square miles (85 km 2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km 2) (1.98%) is water.

In the township the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years.
